MERCOSUR analyzes modalities of reform of the Common External Tariff

On Wednesday (07.04.2021/XNUMX/XNUMX), Argentina hosted the XNUMXth Ordinary Meeting of the Common Market Group, in which members discussed the modalities of reforming the Common External Tariff and the External Relations Agenda.

As holder of the Pro Tempore Presidency of MERCOSUR (founded by Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay), Argentina chaired the virtual meeting where the States Parties raised their proposals for the purposes of greater integration.

According to communication Official of the Argentine Foreign Ministry, the Secretary of International Economic Relations, Jorge Neme, presented his proposal to modify the Common External Tariff, inspired by the objectives of prioritizing productive aspects and instruments that favor competitiveness, taking into account sectoral sensitivities.

According to the information, based on the Proposals presented at the meeting by Argentina and Brazil, the coordinators agreed continue working on the meeting of the Ad Hoc group that will take place on April 14.

Regarding the External Relations Agenda, Argentina highlighted its “vocation to negotiate together with a united MERCOSUR as established by the Treaty of Asunción, and on the other hand, to continue to deepen the active agenda underway and establish priorities to advance in the different scenarios.”

As well, other aspects such as the Special Import Regimes, Nutritional Labeling of Packaged Foods, the MERCOSUR Origin Regime, the Sugar Sector, the Automotive Sector, Electronic Commerce and Services, were discussed at the meeting of the Common Market Group.
