In the framework of International Women's Day 2021, the World Customs Organization (WCO) launches the first edition of the Compendium on gender equality and diversity in Customs.

The WCO thus joins the international community on the United Nations theme: “Women in leadership: achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”, which highlights the important role of women in shaping the future after the pandemic.

The importance of putting people at the centre of the recovery process is fundamental in the post-COVID era, according to the release. This is also highlighted in its 2021 theme: “Customs strengthening recovery, renewal and resilience for a sustainable supply chain.”

The information details that the Compendium, which presents examples from 17 member administrations, is a valuable and timely publication to guide members’ efforts in this area. Going forward, this input will form part of ongoing work compiling additional practices on advancing gender equality and diversity, both internally and in Customs’ engaged engagement with stakeholders.

Conscious and involved,  The WCO has stepped up efforts to promote gender equality and diversity ein customs. In 2017, the Virtual Working Group on Gender Equality and Diversity was launched to provide a platform for Members to exchange experiences and good practices, as well as to disseminate the Gender Equality Organisational Assessment Tool (GEOAT). Subsequently, a combined training package entitled “Promoting Gender Equality in Customs” was developed, comprising a one-week workshop and an e-learning module.

The first edition of Compendium on gender equality and diversity in Customs, The document, announced today, is a step forward in the ongoing work on this topic in the customs field. It was carried out with the support from the UK Prosperity Fund.
