WCO to hold series of symposia to green the harmonized system

The World Customs Organization (WCO) will hold a series of symposia starting in October 5th until January 23rd, 2023, with the aim of greening the 2027 edition of the Harmonized System, it said in a statement.

This initiative will be carried out taking into account that the United Nations 2023 Agenda for Sustainable Development recognizes the importance of international trade to ensure greater environmental sustainability, promoting development and economic growth.

The WCO explained that, in order to green the Harmonized System, a method will be used to identify goods that are of environmental importance, which will provide greater transparency and predictability to trade operations involving these types of goods, and will help to take policy measures to reduce the impact of trade on the environment.

This monitoring will also serve to combat threats to sustainable development, such as illegal trade in wild fauna and flora, illegal exploitation of forest, fishery and mining resources, and waste that threatens international security, as well as economic growth and development.

The OMA meetings are “open to all” will bring together not only customs administrations, but also representatives of intergovernmental organizations, trade negotiators and environmental policy makers, academics, private sector representatives, NGOs and international experts.

According to their programming, the sessions They are organized as follows:

*Wednesday 5th October 2022 (13:00 – 16:00 CET) | Broadening food horizons: recognizing agricultural diversity for sustainable global food security.

*Tuesday, October 25, 2022 (13:00 – 16:00 CET) | Chemists: showing the good, the bad and the revolutionary.

 *Tuesday, November 8, 2022 (12:00 h – 15:00 h CET) | Textile industry: the interaction between textiles and the environment.

*Thursday, December 1, 2022 (12:00 h – 15:00 h CET) | Consider the longevity of the base materials: plastics, metals, wood and other sustainable alternatives.

*Monday, 23 January 2023 (12:00 – 15:00 CET) | The environmental credentials of technology: can we identify the green status of equipment?

The appointments are organized in hybrid format, that is, they will be held in person at the WCO headquarters, located in Brussels, and can also be attended remotely.

All presentations will be translated into English, French and Spanish.
