Costa Rican Rebeca Grynspan assumed her new position this Monday (13.09.2021/XNUMX/XNUMX) as Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), a Geneva-based organization that promotes the integration of developing countries into the world economy.
Rebeca Grynspan is the first woman to lead UNCTAD, a mission she will fulfill for a period of four years and for which she was proposed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
“I am honoured to begin working at UNCTAD at a critical time for our world,” said Grynspan. In her remarks she added: “COVID-19 has exposed the world’s widespread inequalities and vulnerabilities and development model. As we recover from the pandemic, we have an opportunity to rebalance the global economy, boost resilience and ensure shared prosperity.”
Grynspan takes over UNCTAD just weeks before its 15th quadrennial conference, which will take place from 3 to 7 October and which is its most important decision-making body, with the participation of its 195 member States.
The Costa Rican economist also stressed that measures must be taken to transform trade and reshape our global economy to overcome barriers, achieve greater prosperity and embark on a path of sustainable development that will benefit everyone.
Grynspan, former Vice President of Costa Rica, has been Ibero-American Secretary General since 2014 and previously served as UN Under-Secretary General and Associate Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
