La The trade balance registered a deficit of USD 115 million in June, the first negative balance since December 2020 to date, reported this Wednesday (20.07.2022) the National Institute of Statistics and Census (Indec).

The deficit verified in the sixth month of this year was essentially explained by increases in purchases of liquefied natural gas and diesel, for USD 422 million in both cases; natural gas in gaseous state, for USD 117 million; and monoammonium phosphate, for USD 106 million), among other increases.

In June, the Exports totaled USD 8.432 billion, with an increase of 20% year-on-year, while the iImports amounted to USD 8.547 billion, an increase of 44% compared to the same month in 2021.

The INDEC reported that if the prices of June last year had prevailed, the trade balance would have shown a surplus of USD 224 million.

The latter is explained by the fact that the export price index rose by 20,7%, below the values ​​of imported products, which rose by 26,4%.

In this framework, the result of trade exchange throughout the first half of the year marked a Positive balance of USD 3.093 billion, compared to USD 6.774 million in January-June 2021.

Among the factors that impacted the result of the sixth month of the year, according to the Indec report, was also the unit value of international freight, at USD 107,3 per ton, which was 48,4% higher than the same period in 2021 (USD 72,3) and 94,7% higher than that of June 2020 (USD 55,1).

In June, the quantities of primary products sold fell by 12,3% year-on-year, which was partially offset by a 15,4% increase in prices, bringing the total sales to USD 2.049 billion.

For its part, exports of Manufactures of Agricultural Origin registered an increase of 3,7% in terms of quantities sold, with prices 21% higher than twelve months ago, which left a total turnover of USD 3.474 million.

Meanwhile, the volume of shipments of Manufactures of Industrial Origin rose 4%, with prices 12% higher than last year, which resulted in a foreign exchange income of USD 2.183 million.

One area in which an increase in the quantities sold was observed with greater force, of the order of 11%, was in Fuel and Energy, with prices 69% higher than in June 2021, with a total turnover of USD 727 million.

On the other hand, the import of Fuels and Lubricants showed a 19% increase in quantities with values ​​118% higher than in June 2021, which resulted in payments of US$ 1.953 million, an amount equivalent to more than double that registered last year.

Main trading partners

Regarding the main trading partners, the Indec report detailed that Brazil It remains the main player, with exports of USD1.240 billion and imports of USD1.693 billion, with a negative balance of USD453 million.

In second place it was located U.S., with exports of USD 734 million and imports of USD 1.539 million, with a deficit of USD 966 million.

Sales to China, for their part, totaled USD 613 million and purchases USD 1.579 million, with a negative balance of USD 966 million.

The two main positive balances were in trade with the India and with chiliand, which recorded surpluses of USD385 million and USD287 million, respectively, in June. (Argentine trade exchange, June 2022)
