JJapan is considering a bilateral trade agreement with the United States that it would reduce tariffs on American agricultural raw materials in exchange for avoiding higher tariffs on Japanese cars, the Nikkei newspaper reported on Saturday (22.9.2018).
The Government of Japan is considering reducing agricultural tariffs to levels that the United States would have gotten if it had stayed in the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the Nikkei said, citing government sources.
Japanese Economy Minister Toshimitsu Motegi will meet with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on Monday to lay the groundwork for a Meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US President Donald Trump on September 26.
Car trade
Trump has made it clear that he is not happy with Japan's $69.000 billion trade surplus with the United States, nearly two-thirds of which is accounted for by auto exports, and has said he wants a two-way agreement to address it.
Japan wants to avoid higher tariffs on its vehicles and wants to use its negotiations with the European Union for a free trade pact as a model for how to deal with the United States, Nikkei said.
