The Government of Mexico announced that on Thursday (28.09.2023/XNUMX/XNUMX) it hosted an exercise to exchange information, cooperation and good practices with its counterparts from Brazil and Chile on strengthening the implementation of the Convention on the Prohibition of Biological Weapons, as well as compliance with the 1540 resolution of the United Nations Security Council, to prevent materials that could be used for weapons from falling into unauthorized hands.
The event featured the participación the Chairman of the Committee on Resolution 1540 of the United Nations Security Council, Hernán Pérez Loose, of Ecuador; the Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism of the Organization of American States, Alicia August Treppel; a representative of the Support Unit for the Implementation of the Biological Weapons Convention, as well as representatives of the various Mexican agencies involved in the matter, and their counterparts from the governments of Brazil and Chile.
Among the activities, the following were carried out: presentations of federal agencies which make up the High-Level Specialized Committee on Disarmament, Terrorism and International Security (When you are): the National Customs Agency of Mexico (ANAM), the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), the Ministry of Economy, the National Service of Health, Safety and Agri-Food Quality (Senasica), the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SICT), the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena). Two study visits were also carried out to the facilities of the National Customs Agency of Mexico at the Mexico City International Airport, as well as to the laboratory of the National Service for Health, Safety and Agri-Food Quality.
Mexican experts will have the opportunity to carry out similar visits en Brazil and Chile, share experiences, improve their technical capabilities and strengthen their networks of contacts and cooperation. At the end of the exercise, a final report will be prepared, which will be presented as an example of good practices in various multilateral forums that address the topics covered by the exercise.
With these actions, Mexico demonstrates its commitment to combat the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and its conviction to achieve a safer and more peaceful world, based on cooperation and international law.
