A modern canine clinic, maternity ward, classrooms and rooms for the guides, 30 kennels and different types of courts for training the specimens, spread over a 3.700-meter plot of land and a 600-square-meter building, are some of the main features of the Dog Training School of the National Customs Service in the Chilean city of Los Andes (center).
The facility was inaugurated by the national director of Customs, José Ignacio Palma, accompanied by representatives of the Ministries of Public Works and National Assets, local and regional authorities, as well as officials of the service.
The school has the highest standards for breeding and reproducing puppies, as well as for training guides, which makes it the most modern customs facility in Latin America in this area..
This is a key project for the National Customs Service, given the importance of dogs in detecting illegal goods at border checkpoints, such as drugs, cigarettes and medicines.
It was the need to have more specimens, to form new canine pairs and generate replacement of the dogs that retire to a well-deserved rest between 7 and 9 years of age, which prompted the Customs to Build the dog training school with an investment of 650 million pesos from the Customs Illicit Traffic Control Program.
