The Customs of Guatemala and the Republic of China (Taiwan) agreed on a Letter of Intent to strengthen customs cooperation, the Superintendency of Tax Administration of Guatemala reported on Tuesday (15.08.2023).

The Letter was signed in the city of Taipei by the Superintendent of Tax Administration, Marco Livio Díaz Reyes and the Director of Customs of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Ying-Wei Peng, accompanied by the Ambassador of Guatemala in the Republic of China (Taiwan), Oscar Padilla and the Superintendent of Customs, Werner Ovalle," detailed the SAT bulletin.

This is to "increase trade facilitation and customs controls through technological systems and thereby achieve improved voluntary compliance by commercial operators," he added.

The visit also included sessions to exchange experiences with the specialized areas and a tour of the port and airport facilities articulated with the new air and sea clearance models promoted by SAT, as part of the customs modernization model (MIAD).

He also discussed the following actions to achieve benefits for the OEA of both countries.

Finally, it is worth clarifying that this approach is based on the WCO SAFE regulatory framework, which establishes customs cooperation as one of the main mechanisms for learning about and adopting international best practices in order to successfully execute modernization programs.
