Guatemala adds a new checkpoint on the Pacific coast to strengthen security

The Government of Guatemala installed the Third Interinstitutional Control Post (PCI) located at km 132.1 of the jurisdiction of Pasaco, Department of Jutiapa, on the shores of the Pacific, con el objetivo de Strengthening customs control, security and public health of goods in the region, specifically those circulating from El Salvador to Guatemala, according to a statement from the Superintendency of Tax Administration (SAT).

Let us remember that in 2020 two PCIs were enabled; one in Pajapita, San Marcos (south), and another in Between rivers, Puerto Barrios, Izabal (border with Mexico).

The new Inter-Institutional Control Post has personnel from different government agencies and an infrastructure that allows for the identification, interception and confiscation of goods that enter the country evading customs controls; the COINCON Work Plan comprehensively includes the installation of 12 inter-institutional control posts in strategic areas nationwide.

Such positions are the result of a Coordination between SAT and the United States Embassy, through the Section of Anti-Narcotics Affairs and Law Enforcement (INL), within the framework of the Work Plan of the Inter-Institutional Commission for the Prevention and Combat of Tax Fraud and Customs Smuggling (COINCON).

In the face of the initiative, the Guatemalan Customs Minister Werner Ovalle, said: “We are committed at the Customs Office to continue making efforts to combat customs fraud and smuggling in accordance with the law and principles of transparency.”

From January to November last year, the work of the COINCON commission The result was the seizure of merchandise valued at Q20.7 million, through 533 inter-institutional actions, including operations on highways, customs, raids, inspections of businesses and border inventories.
