Guatemala inaugurates second border post to strengthen customs control in the region

The Superintendency of Tax Administration (SAT) through the Customs Office and the Support from the United States Embassy, installed this Wednesday (16.09.2020/XNUMX/XNUMX) a new checkpoint inter-institutional at kilometer 300.2, in the jurisdiction of Entre Ríos, Puerto Barrios, Izabal, with the objective of Strengthen customs control, security and public health activities in the region, specifically goods traveling from Honduras to Guatemala.

According to SAT information, the inter-institutional checkpoint has staff from various government institutions and a monitoring system to identify, intercept and seize goods entering the country evading customs controls and uncontrolled vehicle crossings.

This is the second integrated control post of a project that comprehensively includes the installation of 12, at strategic points nationwide.

The integrated checkpoints are the result of inter-institutional coordination between the Superintendency of Tax Administration and the Embassy of the United States of America, through the Narcotics Affairs and Law Enforcement Section (INL) within the framework of the Work Plan of the Inter-Institutional Commission for the Prevention and Combat of Tax Fraud and Customs Smuggling (COINCON).

Superintendent Mario Livio Díaz emphasized that "This is the second inter-institutional checkpoint at the national level, which will increase risk perception, strengthen controls on the transit of goods, and progressively eradicate illicit trade at the regional level.".

The inauguration was carried out by the Superintendent of Tax Administration, Mario Livio Díaz Reyes, the Superintendent of Customs, Werner Ovalle Ramírez; the Vice Minister of Government, Gendri Rocael Reyes and the Director of INL, Hugo Guevara.
