The Superintendency of Tax Administration (SAT), the entity in charge of tax collection in Guatemala, inaugurated the Fourth Interinstitutional Control Post (PCI) to intensify customs control, security and public health activities in the Central American region, according to the statement.
The opening of the new PCI was carried out through the Customs Office, with the support of the United States Embassy, in the municipality of Patzicía, Chimaltenango Department (central region).
Official information says that this action by the PCI “Its objective is to identify, intercept and seize goods that enter the country evading customs controls, through the result of inter-institutional coordination of the Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, Public Prosecutor's Office and the SAT.".
This is the fourth inter-institutional checkpoint to be inaugurated, out of a total of twelve located at strategic points on the national highway network, which includes the project contemplated in the Work Plan of the Inter-institutional Commission for the Prevention and Combat of Tax Fraud and Customs Smuggling (COINCON).
To date, PCIs are in operation in Pajapita, San Marcos, and Entre Ríos, in the department of Izabal (northeastern region), enabled in 2020, and in Pasaco, in the department of Jutiapa (southeastern region), opened in January of this year.
The activity was inaugurated by the President of the Republic, Alejandro Giammattei; the Ambassador of the United States of America in Guatemala, William W. Popp; the Minister of Public Finance, Álvaro González Ricci; the Superintendent of Tax Administration, Marco Livio Díaz Reyes; the Vice Minister of the Interior, Fernando Rodas; the Director of the Anti-Narcotics Affairs Section of the INL Law, Hugo Guevara; and the Customs Superintendent, Werner Ovalle Ramírez.
