The Superintendency of Tax Administration through the Customs Office, with the support of the Embassy of the United States, installed the Sixth Interinstitutional Control Post located at km 44 of the route to the Atlantic, Municipality of the Department of El Progreso, in the Republic of Guatemala.
The SAT measure, implemented in one of the main commercial routes of the Central American country, has the aim of strengthening customs control, security and public health activities in the region.
The Interinstitutional Control Post (PCI) has personnel of different government institutions and a monitoring system to identify, intercept and seize goods entering the country evading customs controls and uncontrolled vehicle crossings.
The event was attended by the Vice Minister of Finance, Saúl Figuero; the Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the United States, Daniel Fenell; the Director of INL in Guatemala, Christine Harbaugh; the Directors of SAT, Adriana Estévez and Alejandro González; the Superintendent of SAT, Marco Livio Díaz and the Superintendent of Customs, Werner Ovalle Ramírez.
It should be remembered that to stop illicit trade in Guatemala, the Interinstitutional Council for the Prevention and Combat of Tax Fraud and Customs Smuggling (COINCON)) undertook in January 2020 the project of installing 12 Interinstitutional Control Posts (PCI) at strategic points.
To date, five PCIs have been installed in Guatemala: Pajapita-San Marcos (May 2020), Entre Ríos-Puerto Barrios-Izabal (September 2020), Pasaco-Jutiapa (January 2021), Patzicía-Chimaltenango (May 2021) and Río Dulce-Izabal (September 2021).
