Chile: Exports from January to April reach highest level in six years

Chilean exports reached their highest level in six years between January and April, driven by a strong recovery in shipments led by copper, which should contribute to a better performance of economic activity and strengthen tax revenues.

In the first four months, the Shipments totaled US$25.882 billion, its best performance since the same period in 2012, according to data released Monday by the Central Bank.                                                                           

Of the total accumulated exports, Just over half of these corresponded to shipments from the mining sector, in which Chile stands out as the world's largest copper producer.

Imports, meanwhile, showed an increase of 13,4%, to US$21.656. million between January and April, in a reading that would point to a gradual recovery of domestic demand.

The Central Bank reported that the trade surplus was US$983 million in April, driven by a positive performance of its exports led by copper.

Exports of the red metal rose 32,5% in the fourth month, to US$3.002 billion, amid a rebound in the price of the metal and a low comparison base.

The entity reported that the Total exports reached US$6.353 billion in April, a year-on-year increase of 25%. 

Imports, meanwhile, reached US$5.370 billion, an increase of 20% compared to April last year.                

For this year, the Central Bank has forecast a positive trade balance of US$10.400 billion.
