The Agreement on Mutual Administrative Assistance and Cooperation in Customs Matters between Uruguay and Japan will enter into force for both countries on next October 10, according to a statement from Uruguayan customs.
By this instrument, the governments of both countries undertake to provide mutual assistance through their Customs Administrations to ensure the correct application of customs legislation and to prevent, investigate and suppress customs offences.
The initiative establishes the form and content that requests for assistance must have and provisions on the use of information, establishing confidentiality and the degree of protection for the same; thus complying with national regulations on data protection.
The document also includes a commitment to cooperate in the areas of research, development of new customs procedures, control techniques, as well as training activities for customs officials.
It should be noted that the Agreement on Mutual Administrative Assistance and Cooperation in Customs Matters was signed on January 6, within the framework of the celebration of the centenary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Uruguay and Japan. On August 30, it was ratified by the Uruguayan Parliament and, through Law No. 19.975, published in the respective Official Gazette. (Press release from the National Customs Directorate of Uruguay)
