US in no rush to close trade deal with China

-

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he was in no rush to finalise a trade deal with China and insisted that any agreement must include protection for intellectual property, one of the major differences between the two sides during months of negotiations.

Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to hold a summit at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida later this month, but no date has been set and their trade teams have not met in more than two weeks.

The president, speaking to reporters at the White House, said he believed there was a good chance a deal would be reached, in part because China, after suffering from U.S. tariffs, wanted one..

But he acknowledged that Xi may be cautious and not want to go into a summit without a deal in hand, after seeing Trump end a meeting in Vietnam with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un without a deal.

"I think President Xi saw that I'm someone who can walk away when there's no deal, and there's always a chance that could happen and I probably wouldn't want that," Trump said.

Trump decided last month not to raise tariffs on Chinese goods, suggesting negotiations had made successful progress.
