Chile: Two chefs and a waiter caught with drugs

-

Two chefs and a waiter were intercepted by inspectors from the National Customs Service when they were trying to enter Chile with drugs in their suitcases. The procedures took place at the Chacalluta border complex (north).

Garzón, first case

The first case involved a waiter from Lima, who was travelling on an international bus bound for Santiago. His suitcase was selected thanks to an alert given by one of the detector dogs, so the luggage was subjected to a special inspection and in a false bottom the inspectors found 7 packages containing a total of 8 kilos 455 grams of marijuana.

The waiter was placed in preventive detention by order of the magistrate of the Arica Guarantee Court, Juan Araya Contreras, who decreed the legal detention after hearing the account of the events and the formalization made by the prosecutor Mario Concha Matus. The investigation period was set at 90 days.

Chefs, second case

Later, the National Customs Service detected, thanks to the use of non-invasive technology, 2 kilos 950 grams of cocaine hydrochloride hidden in the false bottom of the suitcase of one of the Lima chefs. Meanwhile, the other Lima chef, who was traveling on the same bus, was also carrying a suitcase of similar characteristics with 2 kilos 305 grams of cocaine hidden in the same way inside.

In light of these cases, the Public Prosecutor, Jocelyn Castilo Isopi, charged the two chefs with drug trafficking as perpetrators and Judge Carmen Calas Guerra determined the precautionary measure of preventive detention.

All the drugs seized have a value that could exceed 147 million pesos (US$ 220.956) on the illicit market.
