US postpones tariff hike on Chinese goods, Trump says

-

US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday (24.2.2019) that he will postpone the increase in tariffs on Chinese goods scheduled for March 1st thanks to the progress made in negotiations with Beijing, while stating that if they continue on this path, it is likely that he will reach an agreement with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“As a result of the very productive discussions, I will postpone the US tariff increase scheduled for March 1”Trump tweeted.

The US president also noted that significant progress has been made in trade negotiations with China on intellectual property, agriculture, services, currencies, among other areas.

The US president announced that he plans to hold a summit with President Xi Jinping at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Florida to reach an agreement.

From February 21 to 22, Washington hosted the seventh round of Sino-US negotiations aimed at resolving disputes between the two countries.

The US and China have been locked in a trade war since Trump announced last June the imposition of 25 percent tariffs on Chinese products worth $50.000 billion in an effort to reduce the trade deficit.

Since then, both countries have imposed successive rounds of reciprocal tariffs on each other. In early December 2018, on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Argentina, the leaders of the US and China agreed to a truce in the trade war.
