US to impose sanctions on Argentine biodiesel imports

-

The Government of the United States reported that it will promote anti-dumping tariffs on Argentine imports of biodiesel, because they understand that these products are sold below the normal price, which will paralyze sales in that market.

According to international agencies, the deposit will be collected after "preliminary affirmative determinations" in an investigation into the matter.

Last week, President Mauricio Macri held a telephone conversation with his US counterpart, Donald Trump, to discuss aspects of the bilateral situation such as the obstacles to biodiesel.

According to official reports at the time, during the conversation, Macri and Trump discussed "the dialogue between the private sectors of both countries and the United States Department of Commerce, in order to resolve existing differences so that exports to that country can be resumed."

The impossibility of exporting biodiesel to the American market will be a strong blow for local producers, since it represents a business worth around 1.200 billion dollars.

The US Department of Commerce announced the initiative and clarified that the measure will include Indonesia as well as Argentina.

Tariffs on Argentine biodiesel imports will be between 54,36 and 70,05 percent.

In a statement, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross stressed that Mauricio Macri's administration had asked to suspend anti-dumping investigations.
