Ecuador will export rice to Colombia after 13 years

Ecuadorian rice will be able to re-enter the Colombian market starting December 1 after 13 years, the Ministry of Foreign Trade announced in a statement.

"We want this new achievement of the Government of President (Ecuadorian) Lenín Moreno to be for the benefit of small, medium and large rice producers.", said the minister of that portfolio, Paul Bell, it's a statement.

The agreement was the result of "the signing of a memorandum of understanding" between Minister Campana and his Colombian counterpart María Lorena Gutiérrez.

According to the text, the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) will take the necessary actions so that the procedures for importing the grass from Ecuador are registered in Colombian territory within two business days.

Likewise, The agreement establishes that Colombia will maintain in force the phytosanitary measures for the importation of vegetables, vegetable products and other articles corresponding to rice grain for human consumption., of Ecuadorian origin and provenance.

In addition, work will be carried out jointly with the National Storage Unit (UNA-EP) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) for the first export of the grain to Colombia.

Recent data reveals that the 34% of rice consumed in Colombia is imported and that the highest rice production in that country occurs in the second half of each year (peak harvest).
