The Directors General of Customs concluded today the Twenty-fourth Regional Conference of the Americas and the Caribbean (CRDGA) and highlighted positive results such as the strengthening of international relations, the exchange of experiences and the proposal of initiatives.
After two days of work (May 02 and 03, 2022) in the capital of the Republic of Honduras, the meeting left enriching proposals and good practices for customs administrations, reported the Customs of the Central American country.
According to the information, the dynamics of the meeting was based on three panels which featured the participation of renowned world-class exhibitors and moderators, who addressed “Smart Customs”, “The use of information for decision-making in the new digital era. Post-COVID-19 pandemic challenges” and “Ethics and integrity in the Americas and the Caribbean (AMERICARIBE)”.
At the opening, the Secretary General of the World Customs Organization (WCO), Kunio Mikuriya, told participants that “the World Customs Organization is committed to supporting Customs in the Americas and Caribbean Region in regional activities that can produce results for sharing best practices and shaping the future agenda of the WCO.”
For its part, el Regional Vice President of the World Customs Organization for Latin America and the Caribbean and Superintendent of the Superintendency of Tax Administration of Guatemala (SAT-GT), Werner Ovalle, He said: “This regional conference is a good opportunity to learn about best practices in the use of technology to advance the digital transformation of customs, the use of information for decision-making in the new digital era and the challenges imposed by the pandemic, to learn about the progress and priorities of the WCO and to contribute to efforts to promote ethics and integrity in AMERICARIBE.”
In turn, the Director of the Customs Administration of Honduras, Fausto Cálix, added that “through smart customs, digital customs transformation and the application of advanced analytics models to improve customs control, we seek to make customs procedures and the exchange of information with customs administrations in the region easier, faster and safer.”
The statement reports that, within the framework of the meeting, a session of the OMA was also held in which the new Regional Vice President of the WCO whose representation will be exercised Marilu Llerena, holder of the National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration (SUNAT) of Peru, from 2022 to 2024.
Additionally, the Customs Directors analyzed the priorities in the AMERICARIBE region for capacity building.
These positive results of the annual regional forum will be presented to the WCO Council (governing body) where the 184 member customs bodies participate worldwide, according to Werner Ovalle in his final statements to the press.

The meeting was attended by Kunio Mikuriya, Secretary General of the WCO; Werner Ovalle, Customs Superintendent of Guatemala and Regional Vice President of the WCO for the Americas and the Caribbean; Ricardo Treviño, Deputy Secretary General of the WCO and Fausto Cálix, Executive Director, Customs Administration of Honduras.
Also participating were the Directors of the Customs Administrations of the countries in the region: Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, United States of America, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic and Uruguay.
