China's foreign trade grows 23,7% in first eight months of 2021

China's total imports and exports grew 23,7 percent year on year to 24,78 trillion yuan (3,84 trillion U.S. dollars) in the first eight months of the year, official data showed on Tuesday (07.09.2021).

The figure represents an increase of 22,8 percent compared to the level recorded during the same period in 2019, according to the General Administration of Customs.

Both exports and imports registered double-digit growth between January and August, increasing by 23,2 and 24,4 percent, respectively, compared to last year.

The trade surplus rose 17,8 percent year on year to 2,34 trillion yuan.

In the first eight months of the year, China's trade with its three major trading partners, namely the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the European Union and the United States, recorded healthy growth.

During the period in question, the growth rates of China's trade value with the three partners mentioned above stood at 22,8, 22,1 and 25,8 percent, respectively.

China's trade with Belt and Road countries increased 24,6 percent to 7,29 trillion yuan during the same period, according to the source.

In the first eight months of the year, private enterprises also saw their imports and exports rise by 29,9 percent, reaching 11,92 trillion yuan, accounting for 48,1 percent of the national total, up 2,3 percentage points compared with the same period in 2020.

As for state-owned enterprises, foreign trade increased by 25,2 percent to 3,81 trillion yuan, accounting for 15,4 percent of China's total foreign trade value during the period.

In August alone, the country's imports and exports rose 18,9 percent year on year to 3,43 trillion yuan, the administration said.
