Chile's foreign trade drops 7,4% in 2019

Chile's foreign trade fell 7,4 percent year-on-year in 2019, due to the international situation and the social crisis facing the trans-Andean country.

According to a report by the Central Bank on Tuesday (25.02.2020), exports fell by 7,6 percent last year, while imports fell by 7,2 percent.

According to the entity, The 7,6 percent decline in shipments is the most serious since 2015 (17,4 percent), when Chile's foreign trade fell by 16 percent.

The Central Bank estimated trade for the previous year at 139.274,7 million dollars, with exports of 69.681,9 million dollars and imports of 69.592,8 million dollars.

A decrease in foreign sales was reported in the mining sector (8,8 percent) and in the industrial sector (8,3 percent), while the agricultural and livestock sector showed a growth of 2,4 percent.

In the case of imports, there were declines in the industrial sector (7,8 percent), mining (1,9 percent) and agriculture and livestock (0,3 percent).

Exports to Asia accounted for 54,8 percent of the total, at $38.226,7 billion, with China as the main destination.

In terms of imports, China is once again in the lead with 16.554,8 million dollars traded with the southern country in 2019.
