China will crack down on illegal wildlife trade, ban the consumption of wild animals and impose restrictions on the trade and slaughter of live domestic birds, said Chen Xu, an official with the State Administration for Market Regulation, on Friday (03.07.2020/XNUMX/XNUMX) at a press conference.

Authorities will strengthen supervision over agricultural product marketss to ensure food safety amid the COVID-19 epidemic, he added.

China has 44.000 such markets across the country, including more than 4.100 wholesale markets, Hu Jianping, an official with the Ministry of Commerce, told reporters at the same meeting.

About 70 percent of the country's agricultural products are distributed through wholesale markets, which are the main sales channels for agricultural products, Hu added.

Farmers' markets, both wholesale and retail, have made significant contributions to ensuring market supply as they have continued to operate normally throughout the epidemic, Hu said.
