Within the framework of the deepening of the Partial Agreement of Economic Complementation (ACE) No. 35 of the Latin American Integration Association (Aladi), and with the objective of achieve through a Free Trade Agreement, the incorporation of new disciplines For the benefit of bilateral relations, the first round of virtual business meetings between Paraguay and Chile was held this Tuesday (06.1012020), the Paraguayan Foreign Ministry reported.
The negotiation seeks to create the conditions for the Paraguayan private sector to increase its exports, as well as to attract investments, in order to create the conditions for balanced socio-economic development.
Basically, the meeting focused on the Strengthening and expanding economic, trade and investment relations between both countries. It should be mentioned that Chile is one of the main partners and the largest export destination for the Paraguayan meat industry, with 36% of the total exported in the last month of September, according to data from the National Service for Animal Health and Quality (Senacsa).
The Vice Minister of Economic Relations and Integration, Didier Olmedo, welcomed the participants and gave the opening remarks, recalling that in 1996, the Mercosur partner countries and Chile were innovative and promoted the deepening of regional trade, with the signing of ACE No. 35 for the creation of a free trade area.
Since then, almost 25 years have passed, during which bilateral trade between Paraguay and Chile has multiplied more than tenfold. On the one hand, Paraguayan exports to Chile have registered a significant increase, while Chilean exports to Paraguay have diversified even further and include products with higher added value.
This first round of negotiations will consist of Three intense days of meetings, in which different disciplines will be addressed such as trade and environment, trade and labour issues, trade facilitation, e-commerce, services, competition, MSMEs, good regulatory practices, regional and global value chains, technical barriers to trade, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, as well as institutional and dispute settlement aspects.
It is hoped that thanks to the work of the technical teams of both countries, the foundations can be laid so that in the next meetings the agreement can be updated with the incorporation of new disciplines and progress can be made towards the completion of the objectives set and thus respond to the requirements that today demand a better quality of life for its citizens.
The negotiations will be coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and will include technical teams from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC), the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), the National Customs Directorate (DNA), the National Competition Commission, and the National Telecommunications Commission.
