Chile and Brazil strengthen their bilateral relations

This Monday, August 5, at the Palacio de la Moneda in Santiago de Chile, President Gabriel Boric received his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, during his state visit.

In the context of the meeting, both nations signed Nearly 20 cooperation agreements to promote mutual benefits in areas such as health, science and technology, trade, cybersecurity, public management, reducing inequalities, fighting hunger and poverty, and cooperation in energy and mining.

To this end, Lula was received by the local heads of the Judicial and Legislative branches; in line with the official agenda, today he will speak with representatives of Latam, the largest Chilean company operating in Brazil, and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

The Brazilian president will also participate in the closing ceremony of the Chile-Brazil Business Forum to discuss issues related to bilateral trade between the two countries.

In addition to ministers, advisors and other members of the federal government, around 200 Brazilian businessmen are also in the Chilean capital for various discussions.

The relationship

Brazil and Chile have maintained relations for 188 years, with more than 90 bilateral agreements in force. Brazil is Chile's third largest trading partnerIt is the largest destination for Chilean investments in the world, with examples in the areas of cellulose, retail trade and energy; the airline Latam is the largest Chilean company present on Brazilian soil.

According to official information, Chile is the sixth destination for exports from Brazil, which is the largest Latin American investor in the country. Trade between the two countries amounts to USD 12 billion per year.

Additionally, it is worth keeping in mind that Bioceanic Corridor, a strategic project that seeks to link the towns of Puerto Murtinho in Brazil with the ports of northern Chile (Antofagasta, Mejillones, Puerto Angamos, Iquique and Arica), crossing the northern region of Paraguay (Chaco Boreal) and part of the provinces of Salta and Jujuy in Argentina.
