Chile raises the maximum fee for courier company shipments to US$3.000

-

The Ministry of Finance has set a maximum amount of US$3.000 for all shipments made through express delivery companies or Courier through a decree published in the Official Gazette.

Courier companies were formally recognized in 2017 with the publication of the Customs Modernization Law. They are those that provide the service of collection, transportation, reception and delivery of shipments to and from abroad. In addition, they are responsible for the payment of duties, taxes, fees and other charges generated by imports and exports carried out through them. By recognizing them, the same Law increased the standards required for their incorporation and entry into operations.

Before the new amount was established, these companies could make shipments of up to US$1.000 FOB (Free on Board) for import products and US$2.000 FOB for export products.

“This is an important step to help SMEs in their processes of insertion in international trade and represents a step forward in the Government's Productivity, Innovation and Growth Agenda that seeks to democratize the export process.", said the Minister of Finance, Felipe Larraín.

The Finance Minister added that this change is also a step towards turning Chile into a platform country for logistics services.

“Chilean companies, especially SMEs, will be able to explore new markets, reaching their target markets more quickly and at lower costs. We are betting not only on agility, but on innovation,” destacó.

The new value is the result of a review of the processes related to this type of company and aims to achieve a balance between the needs imposed by the dynamics of foreign trade, which in recent years has seen an explosive increase due to the emergence and consolidation of phenomena such as electronic commerce, and the need for the National Customs Service to maintain its role of supervising the import and export of goods.

For his part, the National Director of Customs, José Ignacio Palma, indicated that “the entry into force of this regulation allows us to have effective control over the inspection of these imports and exports. This is because in the case of these shipments we have advance information that allows us to carry out selective inspections by applying risk management models. In this way we not only manage to reduce the gaps in tax evasion, but we also preserve the role that is our responsibility as a Service, which is to safeguard the security of our country in the face of the phenomenon of the increase in illicit trade in goods.”

This increase in the amounts associated with the processing of goods by express shipping companies is one of the measures that the Ministry of Finance has implemented in recent years that tend to facilitate and simplify customs procedures, in order to increase the country's competitiveness.
