Chile: Puerto Varas will host APEC-Chile 2019 meetings

The Los Lagos Region (south) will host meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC), joining the regions of Antofagasta, Valparaíso and Biobío, announced the General Directorate of International Economic Relations of Chile.

Agenda

Beginning August 17th, 2019, in Puerto Varas, work group meetings, workshops and seminars will take place, ending on August 29th and 30th with the third APEC Senior Representatives Meeting (SOM3). In parallel, the Food Security Week will be held in this same city.

Priorities

The Minister added that “as a host economy we have the opportunity to highlight issues of great impact for the development of the Asia Pacific region.” Chile has defined three priorities: Services and Digital Economy, which will address the development of good regulatory practices, capacity building for an inclusive digital economy, improving statistical measurements in services and consumer confidence levels in the use of digital tools, teleworking, and reaching new markets through the use of new technologies; Regional Connectivity, which aims to generate more fluid, dynamic and inclusive trade, promoting the development of broad connectivity in all its dimensions, which allows responding to new market needs, and promoting a better insertion of SMEs in global value chains; and Women and economic growth, which seeks to increase women's participation in the economy and international trade as a source of economic growth and reduction of gender gaps.

The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) is the principal intergovernmental forum for facilitating economic growth, technical and economic cooperation, trade and investment facilitation and liberalization in the Asia Pacific region.

Created in 1989, it is made up of 21 economies, to which Chile joined in 1994. APEC represents 60% of the world's GDP and nearly 40% of the global population. In 2017, the APEC region grew by 4,1%, higher than the 3,4% in 2016.
