Chile promulgates the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership

The Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Tuesday (21,02.2023) that the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), known as TPP-11, came into force in the country.

In promulgation of the Cptpp, published in the Official Journal, it is recalled that on March 8, 2018, the "Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership" was signed in Santiago, Chile, between Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, the United Mexican States, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Republic of Chile, the Republic of Peru, the Republic of Singapore and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and the letters exchanged in the context thereof."

It is indicated that the Agreement was approved by the National Congress on October 12, 2022.

"That, on December 23, 2022, the provisions of Paragraph 2 of Article 3 of the aforementioned Treaty were complied with and, consequently, it will enter into force on February 21, 2023," reads the official text.

Steps for its implementation

The Chilean Foreign Ministry stated that since last night (Monday 20), the country began to participate as a full member in the virtual meeting of senior officials of the CPTPP, coordinated by New Zealand as the host country.

According to official information, the Government is advancing in the implementation of this treaty through the Interministerial Committee for International Economic Negotiations and, with its entry into force, "it will will coordinate the proper application of the Cptpp with the actors involved."

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also indicated that it "will continue to work together with its commercial partners in the CPTPP and in other international spaces to advance the reform and modernization of the dispute resolution mechanisms between investors and States."

Chile thus becomes the tenth economy to be a full member of this treaty, which is also signed by: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.
