Chile participates in the Permanent Technical Committee of the World Customs Organization

Chile, through the National Customs Service, participated in Sessions 237 and 238 of the Permanent Technical Committee (PTC), which took place from October 25 to 27, 2022, at the headquarters of the World Customs Organization (WCO), located in Brussels (Belgium).

This is the the most important technical body of the WCO, where information on international standards and best practices in customs procedures is discussed and shared, with responsibility for topics and activities related to trade facilitation and the supervision of international trade.

Likewise, this Committee includes a series of technical groups of experts, working groups, project teams, contact committees and management committees, among others.

For this quote, the calendar included topics such as Green Customs, the role of Customs in fragile and conflict-affected situations, progress of the COVID-19 project, port-customs cooperation and e-commerce.

“The National Customs Service has a very relevant role in the discussion of various issues, both at a regional and global level. For our Service, it is very important to be at the forefront of all the issues discussed, due to the impact they may have on foreign trade and the socio-economic development of the country, especially considering the breadth of trade agreements we have and the roles of protecting borders and people,” explained the Acting Head of the Customs International Affairs Department, Andrea Ortiz Venegas.  

During the working sessions in Belgium, the importance of the coordinated border management and cooperation with other international organizations and stakeholders, such as the World Bank, the Universal Postal Union and the International Association of Ports and Terminals (IAPH).

Similarly, work was done on the projects of the Project Team. Data Model and Anti-Piracy and Counterfeiting Group, among others. All these topics will continue to be developed permanently and at the next meeting in April 2023.

Another of the topics discussed by Chile, in parallel, was the organization and execution of the Global Origin Conference, to be held in Chile in November 2023.
