Chile integrates new canine guides for border control

-

With the assignment of their dogs and the certification that accredits them as guides, 4 officials were incorporated into the provision of guide-can detector binomials of the National Customs Service of Chile.

The ceremony took place at the facilities of the Los Andes Dog Training School, and was attended by the National Director of Customs, José Ignacio Palma, the Deputy Director of Inspection (s), Ana Karina Ochoa, the Director of the Metropolitan Customs, Rodrigo Díaz, the Administrator of the Los Andes Customs, Mariano Gómez, in addition to authorities of the Service, officials and family members of the new guides, who participated telematically.

The course, which lasted one month and was carried out in the in-person-internship modality, aimed to provide the guides with the tools to learn everything necessary for operational work at different control points, specifically in the detection of drugs and illicit goods.

El National Director, Jose Ignacio Palma, indicated that “it is always a joy to participate in these instances due to the enormous contribution that canine technology represents for the Service: they are an especially relevant tool for the Customs inspection work. Every time we learn of a successful discovery, we know with certainty that it was with the support of these guides with their dogs. This team that graduates today is destined for the new terminal of the Santiago International Airport, but it will also reinforce other tasks carried out by the Regional Directorate of the Metropolitan Customs. We welcome them and we are sure that they will be a valuable contribution wherever they are assigned to perform.”

In an emotional speech, the representative of the graduating students indicated that “a country, a civilization, can be judged by the way it treats its animals. Here we have seen and learned how the Service cares for its dogs and how they become a true companion. Here their skill is recognized, their ability to join the work, to connect as what they are, true detection professionals. We are very happy that the four students are finishing this course today, but we are eight detectorists, who will join the work force of the Metropolitan Regional Customs Directorate and we will be good representatives of our School.”

On this occasion, the four graduates paid special tribute to the instructor and Head of the Training School, Juan Carlos Peña.

The new pairs are added to the 26 that Customs has in operation nationwide at the different border crossings.

It is worth noting that the ninth Canine Binomial Training Course was held entirely at the Training School of the Service of the Andes commune, inaugurated in 2019 with the highest standard, which has allowed the breeding and training of dogs and which has all the comforts so that canine guides can carry out their training and improvement courses in boarding format.
