Chile: Advantages of customs auctions exposed

-

More resources for the treasury and greater citizen participation are some of the advantages of the electronic auctions carried out by the National Customs Service of Chile. The characteristics of the process and its main results were announced in a Keynote speech to students of the Foreign Trade Technician course at the Arturo Prat University (Unap).

The training took place in the Oscar Hahn room and was conducted by Head of the Auction Unit of the Administrative Department of the Iquique Customs, Hugo Valdés Alzamora, who referred to the progress and cost reduction that meant moving from a traditional auction to a virtual one. “People no longer need to travel to see the goods or participate in the auctions. They can do it from anywhere with an Internet connection. The catalogues are also available on the web and to participate you need the Unique Key plus a guarantee. All of this is part of the digital transformation that drives our Service,” explained Valdés.

El Director of the Technical Training Department of Unap, Pedro Gómez Bastidas, highlighted the professionalism and empathy of the speaker, as well as the connection with Customs in favor of the academic development of the student community.

Hugo Valdés added that in the last electronic auction, where Iquique was the managing unit, $318.566.181 (USD 380) was raised for 140 lots. “The final collection registered an increase of 501% over the initial price and 5.152 people registered to participate. This figure far exceeds the average for in-person auctions.”
