Chile: Preventing the entry of counterfeit glasses with a high risk to health

-

Inspectors from the Chilean National Customs Service intercepted a thousand counterfeit glasses imitating Oakley sports models at the port of Iquique (north). These goods were coming from China to the Free Trade Zone and, by not meeting the standards for optical products, put people's health at risk.

Prior documentary analysis

The Regional Director of the Iquique Customs Office, Cristian Silva Molina, explained that the detection was achieved thanks to the prior documentary analysis carried out by the inspectors before the cargo arrives in Chile.During this work, a container was selected and upon inspection, 21 packages with 2.950 products were found and a simple examination established that they infringed the Intellectual Property Law, for which reason the shipment was immediately suspended.".

Illegal trade

Among the counterfeit products, 950 Spiderman patches, 500 Hello Kitty sequin patches and another 500 Minion patches were detected, as well as 1.000 polarized lenses with accessories that imitate the Oakley brand, specifically the Radarlock sports models, which are glasses with the option of changing their optics using switchlock technology. "The original lenses have very different characteristics to those we found because what arrived at the port is plastic material that does not meet the standards for products for optical use.".

Molina Silva added that in addition to the trademark and tax issue, “Obviously here is a product that is used to deceive the consumer and that also puts their health at risk.".

The goods were covered by an import declaration to a Free Trade Zone and the customs value was set at $10.533.305 (US$ 15.490), therefore, tax evasion amounts to $2.753.394 (US$ 4.050).
