The National Customs Service with the support of Carabineros carried out the seizure of 14.000 packets of cigarettes being smuggled into Chile.
This procedure began after an investigation developed by the teams of the Regional Customs of Arica (north), based on a complaint made by a private mail company (Courier) located in the regional capital.
After obtaining the order to investigate issued by the Arica Prosecutor's Office, the Risk Analysis Unit (UAR) of the Arica Customs generated the corresponding coordination with OS9 officers of Carabineros, managing to remove from circulation Carnival Blue brand cigarettes that were being sent to Santiago.
The amount of duties and taxes not collected due to non-legal entry into the country corresponds to the sum of USD 34.218,95, equivalent to 31.059.513 in Chilean pesos.
El Regional Director of the Arica Customs, Luis Zárate I want, highlighted “the successful collaboration between Carabineros and the National Customs Service in the seizure of this significant amount of illegal cigarettes, which demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated work in the fight against smuggling and organized crime, to meet the objectives of protecting people and borders.”
This new procedure is in addition to the multi-million dollar seizure of cigarettes and agricultural chemicals carried out by Customs inspectors at the Chungará border crossing a few days ago. In that case, 61.500 packets of contraband drugs were seized that were hidden inside a tanker truck entering from Bolivia.
