Central America launches program to train officials on 'Free Trade Agreements'

The Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration (SIECA) and the Inter-American Development Bank (INTAL/IDB) inaugurated this Thursday (04.08.2022/XNUMX/XNUMX) the Training Program for Free Trade Agreement (FTA) Negotiators.

In this joint effort designed to explore how regional trade agreements boost investment, more inclusive trade, promote knowledge services, foster digital trade and contribute to regional economic integration.

This was highlighted during the opening of the virtual course  Experts from the organizing institutions participated in the panel that framed the launch of the initiative to strengthen the capacity for negotiation and implementation of trade agreements of the governments of the Central American region.

In that initial session Duayner Salas Chaverri, Chief of Staff of SIECA, and Ana Basco, Director of INTAL/IDB, participated.

Duayner Salas He highlighted the importance of trade training for trade agreement negotiators in the region and provided information on the course's development.

In the same line, Ana Basco He highlighted the design of the training program and shared information about the work carried out by INTAL in the area of ​​development in the region.

 The following was then carried out first session of the course, with the participation of Osvaldo Rosales, former director of the International Trade and Integration Division of ECLAC; Ricardo Rozemberg, Senior Sector Specialist of INTAL/IDB; and Duayner Salas, Chief of Staff of SIECA.

As an exhibitor, Osvaldo Rosales He developed the class: Trade, Investment and Regional Integration for Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), in which he addressed the main economic-political variables that intervene in economic development at a global level. 

Duayner Salas Chaverri, as the first commentator, highlighted the quality of the presentation and emphasized the examples of the United States and the European Union (EU) that reflect how Central America has used its own process to deepen its relationship with third-party strategic partners.

 In this regard, Ricardo Rozember He highlighted, among other topics, the importance of regional value chains in the economic development of Latin American economies, emphasizing that value chains are fundamentally regional.

Therefore, participants have the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge, during 5 days, in the following Topics into which the course has been divided:

  • Trade, investment and regional integration for development in LAC
  • Reorganization of global supply chains and the possible impacts for Central America
  • Central America and Knowledge-Based Services (KBS)
  • Cross-border e-commerce in Central America
  • Gender equity in trade and subregional agreements in LAC.

In this way, SIECA and the IDB support Central American countries to deepen their regional integration through this range of trade instruments.
