Brazil suspends pork imports from Germany

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture suspended on Monday (14.09.2020) the import of raw or minimally processed pork from Germany, following the confirmation of a case of African swine fever in a dead wild boar.

In the statement to the European country, The Brazilian government is requesting detailed information from health authorities on the biosecurity measures adopted by German industrial plantsThe ministry did not say how long the suspension would last. Germany is Europe's largest producer of animal protein.

The contamination was confirmed last Thursday (10.09.2020) by the German government, which found African swine fever in a dead wild boar near the border with Poland. An area of ​​15 square kilometers where the animal was found was quarantined.

In addition to Brazil, other countries China and South Korea have also temporarily suspended imports of pork from Germany.

Federal government data indicate that Brazil imported 1.800 tons of German pork protein from January to August this year. According to the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), the main products purchased in the European country are fresh and frozen pork intestines.
