Brazil extends tariff reduction for importing medicines, ethanol and food

-

The Brazilian Government announced the extension, until March 31, 2023, of the reduction of the tariff for importing more than 600 products, including medicines, food and supplies to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, official sources reported.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Economy, the Executive Steering Committee (Gecex) of the Chamber of Foreign Trade (Camex) decided to extend, for three months, the special tariffs for this type of products, during its 201st meeting.

The decisions released on Friday (23.12.2022) by the Ministry are aimed at ensuring that the elected government has adequate time to evaluate the size and impact of the measures and decide on the convenience of maintaining external tariffs.

According to the official note, the measures were taken opportunely in a "temporary and exceptional manner", due to the pandemic, international shortages of supplies and rising global food prices.

Camex also extended the reduction to zero of the Import Tax on ethanol and foods such as beef, chicken, coffee, wheat, corn, wheat flour, soybean oil, crackers and biscuits, pasta, sugar, registered in the List of Exceptions to the Common External Tariff of Mercosur (Letec). The zero rate will be in effect until January 31 for ethanol and until March 31 for other concepts.

Chaired by the Ministry of Economy and composed of representatives of the Presidency of the Federative Republic of Brazil and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Gecex is the executive collegiate core of the Chamber of Foreign Trade (Camex). Among the functions of Gecex/Camex are the definition of import and export tax rates, the establishment of trade defense measures and the internalization of rules of origin for trade agreements.Ministry of Economy statement) (Full meeting decision ª 201 by Gecex)
