Brazil on track for record harvest

-

Brazil expects to harvest 240,9 million tons of grain this year, a historic record, which would be its best result ever, above the 209,7 billion tons of 2015, according to figures and projections announced by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics.

And also a spectacular increase of 56,2 million over the 184,7 of the previous year. Or what is the same, a increase of 30,4% compared to 2016 in the harvest of cereals, legumes and oilseeds.

These figures are partly due to the fact that the total area of agricultural crops is expected to increase by 7,0% this year, to 61,1 million hectares from 57,1 million hectares in 2016.

An increase that will benefit corn in particular, as the area devoted to this type of grain in Brazil is expected to increase by 18% this year, while that of rice is expected to do so at a rate of 4% and that of soybeans at 2,3%.

However, the forecast is that the harvested quantities of each of these grains will increase far above the surface area destined for their cultivation and, according to the figures offered by the Rio de Janeiro authorities, the harvest of Corn will grow by 54,7%; soybean, 19,6% and rice, 16,2%.

These three cereals are expected to account for 93,7% of total production, a figure which, in line with their higher yields, would correspond to 87,9% of the harvested area.
