Trade deficit widens in August

The Argentine economy is going through a complex situation. Trade in August increased by 1.5% deficit to USD 1.011 billion, compared to a negative result of USD 296 million recorded in the same month last year, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC) on Thursday (21.09.2023/XNUMX/XNUMX).

According to the technical report, the exports reached USD 5.854 million, with a year-on-year drop of 22,4%, and the imports amounted to USD 6.865 billion, equivalent to a decrease of 12,4% less than that recorded in July.

In the year-on-year comparison, the 22,4% drop in exports was due to a 12% drop in quantities and a 1% drop in prices.

By segment, all items decreased: manufactures of agricultural origin (MOA), 28,0%; primary products (PP), 26,1%; fuels and energy (CyE), 15,3%; and manufactures of industrial origin (MOI), 13,2%.

Meanwhile, the Imports fell 12,4% compared to August 2022 and halted the outflow of USD 972 million due to the 18,4% drop in prices, as quantities increased 7,4%.

By segment, all economic uses decreased: imports of passenger motor vehicles (VA), 88,1%; fuels and lubricants (CyL), 54,3%; rest, 32,8%, mainly due to the lower purchase of goods dispatched by postal services (couriers); intermediate goods (BI), 10,2%; and consumer goods (BC), 3,8%. Regarding capital goods (BK), there was no variation, parts and accessories for capital goods (PyA) grew 17,3%

In the first eight months of the yearArgentina accumulated a trade deficit of USD 6.205 million, compared to a positive balance of USD 2.197 million in the same period of 2022.

Argentina had recorded a trade surplus of USD 6.923 billion last year, which represents a 53% drop in relation to the positive balance achieved in 2021. (Argentine trade. Estimated figures for August 2023)
