Marilú Llerena Aybar, Deputy National Superintendent of Customs of Peru, assumed today (01.07.2022) the Regional Vice Presidency of the World Customs Organization (WCO) for the Americas and the Caribbean, a position she received from Guatemala to serve in the period 2022 to 2024.
Her appointment was announced at the WCO Council after being elected by the 33 member countries of that region. Llerena Aybar is a Certified Public Accountant by profession and has a Master's degree in taxation and fiscal policy from the University of Lima, with more than 20 years of experience in the National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration (SUNAT).
The WCO regional vice-presidencies are elected by the members of each region and play a fundamental role in regional leadership, promoting customs standards and good practices, representing in forums and fostering cooperation between countries in the region and with other regions, as well as with the WCO and other international organizations.
Marilú Llerena Aybar expressed her commitment to work for a more digital, competitive, integrated and inclusive region, promoting institutional strengthening, intra and interregional cooperation and digital transformation.
It also aims to promote the consolidation of the role of Customs in the competitiveness of nations and global security, facilitating legitimate trade, as well as the inclusion and formalization of new trade actors - SMEs, women, rural and border populations - through digital services, disruptive technologies and advanced analytics to achieve smarter and less intrusive customs control.
“With this important designation, Peru, through Sunat, reinforces its regional leadership in the implementation of customs standards and good practices, positioning itself as a manager and promoter of the digital transformation of foreign trade processes for the competitiveness and security of the international supply chain,” said the Peruvian tax authority.
