Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie met with his Uruguayan counterpart Rodolfo Nin Novoa in Buenos Aires to discuss the agenda shared by both countries in the areas of security, trade, infrastructure and research, among others, official sources reported.
At a meeting held at the San Martín Palace - headquarters of the Argentine Foreign Ministry - the ministers highlighted "the deep and intense relationship between both countries, which has been strengthened and diversified in recent years as a result of cooperation," the local Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported in a press release.
Both diplomats reviewed the dredging, deepening and maintenance projects in the Río de la Plata and the Uruguay River to promote ship traffic and "boost the export capacity of regional economies."
They also agreed on the need for Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay to reach an Agreement to fight drug trafficking in the Paraguay-Paraná waterway and to achieve the internalization of the regulations of the Intergovernmental Waterway Committee.
Along the same lines, they committed to strengthening the mechanisms for exchanging information in the fight against organized crime, and pointed out the importance of continuing to work for the full functioning of the areas of Integrated Control (ACI), as well as the rest of the authorized international crossings.
On the other hand, they agreed to meet the Bilateral Commission on Trade Affairs starting this June to negotiate "the facilitation of
reciprocal trade and the resolution of any difficulties in accessing products to the markets of both countries," they continued.
They also proposed to start negotiations with their respective Ministries of Health to formalize an agreement that would allow for the care of non-resident citizens of each country in cases of medical emergencies and urgency when they are in the territory of the other.
A future signing of a memorandum for the Antarctic bilateral cooperation, particularly in the scientific and logistical areas, was another of the topics they scheduled as pending.
The meeting took place in the presence of a Uruguayan delegation that accompanied Nin Novoa during his trip through the neighboring country.
