Argentina records seventh consecutive surplus in its trade balance in June

Argentina ended June with a positive balance of USD 1.911 million in its trade balance, adding exports for USD 6.590 million (21% more than the same month in 2023), and reducing its imports by 35,4%, to USD 4.679 million.

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC) on Thursday (18.07.2024), trade (exports plus imports) decreased 11% compared to the same month of the previous year and reached an amount of 11.269 million dollars.

Exports increased mainly due to a 30,2% increase in quantities, as prices fell by 6,6%. Sales increased in all categories in this order: primary products (40,1 %%), fuels and energy (24,2%), agricultural manufactures (16,1%) and industrial manufactures (13,1%).

Meanwhile, imports fell both in quantity and price, by 34,5% and 1,7%, respectively. By category, imports of intermediate goods fell (-37,4%), parts and accessories for capital goods (-37,3%), capital goods (-34,8%), passenger motor vehicles (-33,5%), fuels and lubricants (-31,2%) and consumer goods (-29,7%).

In the period from January to June 2024, Argentina's exports totaled USD 38.176 million and imports totaled USD 27.468 million. Thus, it accumulated a trade surplus of USD 10.708 million, given that exports increased when in the first six months of 2023 a deficit of USD 6.925 million had been recorded.

During this period, Brazil was the main destination for exports with 16,2% of the total; followed by China with 9,4%, while the United States and Chile received 7,6% and 7,4% of Argentine exports, respectively.

The origin of imports was led by Brazil, China and the United States, which represented 22,5%, 16,8% and 11,4% of Argentine purchases, in the order given. (Argentine trade. Estimated figures for June 2024, INDEC)
