After 17 years, Argentina made its first shipment of beef to the United States

-

The national government and the company Swift Argentina in Etchevehere confirmed the first shipment of beef to the United States on Tuesday (11.12.2018) in a meeting.

The Secretary of Government for Agribusiness, Luis Miguel Etchevehere, together with Swift businessmen, João Luis Sampaio and Miguel de Achaval, president of the company in Argentina, said that 500 kg of ribeye steak were sent to Miami after 17 years.

"It is a great satisfaction that just 15 days after announcing the reopening of the US market, the first export has already been made. "In addition, with high-value cuts for a market with great potential, which will translate into greater employment for every corner of Argentina," said Etchevehere.

Public-private initiative

The importance of public-private partnerships allows the private sector to respond quickly with investments in response to new political developments.

"2018 will be remembered as a historic year in the meat export market. Argentina has consolidated its position as the world's 6th exporter, second within Mercosur, and a year in which bovine exports grew by 70,1%," the Secretary of Government stressed.

Swift executives, meanwhile, considered the challenge of supplying high-quality meat products to the United States, the world's largest food importer.

The benefit of accessing

Argentina will have an access benefit of a quota of 20.000 tons per year which would represent a value of 150 to 180 million dollars, and exports exceeding this volume will have to pay an entry tariff of 26,4%.

It is estimated that 80% of the product to be exported would be lean meat that the American industry demands for the production of hamburgers. and is not produced in sufficient quantities by American producers. The remaining 20% would be high quality cuts, such as the one being shipped tonight, "premium" products with special characteristics. The United States authorizes the importation of all boneless carcass cuts, with the exception of the head, hooves and giblets.

The reopening of the American market has been the result of joint work between the Secretariat of Agroindustry of the Nation, the Ministry of Production and Labor, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Argentine Embassy in the United States, and Senasa among other organizations that with this milestone contribute to strengthening the commercial relationship between the United States and the government of President Macri.
