Argentina opens important markets to India

The Secretary of Agroindustry of the Nation, Luis Miguel Etchevehere, announced the approval of export protocols for lemons, fresh eggs and egg products, fish and bone meal, and chia seeds. In addition, Argentina authorized the entry of millet and guar seeds from that country., during the meeting between President Mauricio Macri and the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, within the framework of the state visit to that Asian country.

Etchevehere said that “Argentina has a population of 44 million people and our agro-industrial sector produces for 440 million with a potential of 600 million by 2025. Our country can be a strategic partner to provide food in quantity and quality to India.”

“Domestic food and beverages are prepared with the highest quality standards, ready to reach consumers in this part of the continent. These are aimed at significant growth in nutritious and healthy food, produced in a sustainable manner,” said the head of the agro-industrial portfolio.

Cooperation work

Etchevehere signed two cooperation work plans with his Indian counterpart, Parshottam Rupala. One of them will speed up sanitary and phytosanitary approvals of products of mutual interest by the respective regulatory authorities and will improve market access.

The second is intended for improving the scope of agricultural cooperation between India and Argentina, including technology exchange to increase productivity and reduce post-harvest losses and build climate resilience.

The conclusion of the Work Plan for cooperation in the field of agricultural research establishes a mechanism that will allow for the deepening of cooperation and productive innovation, and the transfer of technology between INTA and ICAR. All areas in which Argentina is recognized worldwide.

Both parties agreed to continue working to quickly finalize the access to the Indian market for oranges, mandarins, grapefruit, grapes, blueberries, walnuts, yerba mate and sesame seeds.

Etchevehere spoke at the Argentina-India Business Forum to businessmen where he highlighted the business, trade and investment opportunities between the two countries. The Undersecretary of Agricultural Markets, Jesús Silveyra, and the National Directors of Dairy Products, Alejandro Sammartino, and Agriculture, Ignacio Garciarena, participated in the event. In addition, they participated in the “India-Argentina Agroindustry Seminar” with experts from INTA, SENASA and SECAGRO.
