Argentina's trade balance recorded a surplus of USD 6.923 billion in 2022

The National Institute of Statistics and Census (Indec) released today (19.01.2023/XNUMX/XNUMX) the report on Argentine Trade Exchange (ICA) referring to December and the end of 2022.

The report highlights that the trade balance registered a surplus of USD 6.923 million in 2022, which implies a contraction of 53% compared to the total reached in 2021.  

According to Indec, the volume of trade (exports plus imports) increased by 20,4% compared to 2021, reaching 169.969 billion dollars.

The country realized exports for a record figure of USD 88.446 million, 13,5% more than in 2021, thanks to a rise in prices of 16,2%, although the quantities fell by 2,3%, according to Indec.

Regarding the imports totaled USD 81.523 billion last year, representing a year-on-year increase of 29%, driven by an increase in quantities of 11% and in prices of 16,3%.

In 2022, the main destinations of Argentine sales abroad were Brazil (14,3%), China (9,1%), United States (7,5%), Chile (5,6%), India (5,2%), Netherlands (4,0%), Vietnam (3,7%), Peru (2,8%), Indonesia (2,4%) and Republic of Korea (2,3%), in that order.

According to Indec, Argentina ended the year with a deficit with Mercosur and mainly with Brazil (USD 3.472 million), although the largest unfavorable exchange was recorded with China (USD 9.494 million). With USMCA (United States, Canada and Mexico), the deficit reached USD 3.904 million and with the European Union USD 272 million, according to official data.

Instead, the country recorded a surplus in trade with Chile for USD 4.160 billion, followed by the ASEAN group for USD 3.670 billion, Africa and Maghreb for USD 2.784 billion, India with USD 2.706 billion and the Middle East with USD 2.121 billion.

According to the official report, the trade balance in December last year, closed with a balance in its favor of USD 1.102 million.

Exports totaled USD 6.119 billion, down 7,1% year-on-year, and imports totaled USD 5.017 billion, down 19,3%.
