Paraguay Customs receives new scanners to provide greater security for its foreign trade

The event took place on the esplanade of the Government Palace with the presence of President Mario Abdo Benítez, the ambassador of Taiwan José Chih-Cheng Han, the Minister of the UIC Emilio Fuster and the Minister of the SENAD Zully Rolón, as well as businessmen and dispatchers.

On this occasion, the Customs Minister Julio Fernandez, stated that the effort made was very great, with savings in many areas and a very intense battle to achieve this goal. "Today, having this equipment is a great satisfaction, we thank the President of the Republic who from the beginning motivated the meetings and contacts to be able to move quickly," he said.

He said that four of the devices were donated by Taiwan, which he described as "high-tech and extremely versatile." In addition to these, there are three more powerful devices and one new one. The investment is around USD 20 million.

"We can say that all Paraguayan trade, mainly exports, which are those that generate contamination risks, all of these loads will be scanned," he said.

He also said that all scanners are already in operation currently, however Since April 01, all loads must be controlled by this equipment, before leaving Paraguayan territory.

On the point, Fernandez commented that Neighboring nations such as Argentina and Uruguay will receive the scanned images simultaneously, as well as the destination countries, in order to provide traceability and competitiveness to Paraguay's foreign trade.

"We want to give the DEA the link to the images to ensure sustainability over time, so they can access them whenever they want and it will be a transparent country," he announced, while emphasizing that inter-institutional collaboration will be key to maintaining this type of work.

"Today we are taking a giant step because we had practically nothing, we were unprotected and today this equipment is already in operation, it will help us a lot," he said.

At another point, he said that they are putting out to tender another 10 manual machines and the idea is to have them before the end of this administration. This would bring the total to 14 machines of this size.

"There are a number of jobs that we are doing that have never been done before, at least with the intensity that we are doing now," he stressed.

In turn, the Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) José Chih-Cheng Han, mentioned that the implementation of the technological tool to guarantee good controls of the goods has become of vital importance in the fight against organized crime. At the same time, it is necessary to adjust to the standards required by international organizations.

"We are very pleased to be able to collaborate with Paraguay in its objective of combating the smuggling of goods, an important task that it carries out through Customs to facilitate the growth of a more transparent trade within the framework of national and international legal regulations," he said.

He revealed that the four scanners provided by Taiwan will allow Paraguay to better monitor containers entering and leaving the country, in compliance with the mission of providing greater security in ports and combating corruption.
