In October, Panama Customs (ANA) will launch the first tests of the PORTCEL project, a digital platform to simplify port and shipping procedures and exchange information between various institutions, in a fluid and expeditious process, which will also reduce the amount of paperwork.
According to the statement from the Panama Customs Authority, PORTCEL seeks to increase the country's competitiveness, enabling digitalized paperless processes, in most cases, improving cargo controls by the authorities responsible for exercising control in foreign trade operations, by providing the basis for cargo traceability, especially that in transit and transshipment operations.
To this end, the statement indicated that training and adjustments are already being carried out for companies that will be connected to this platform, including port terminals, shipping companies, and the Panama Canal Authority. It was announced that some companies have to make adjustments to their systems to use this platform. In October, a pilot plan will begin with two shipping companies to test the system.
Panama Customs reported that it plans to have the PORTCEL platform in operation as of January 1, 2023, so employees are already trained in a primary phase in maritime cargo and later other phases such as air and land cargo will be covered. (ANA Press Release)
