Panama Customs signs memorandum to strengthen transparency and anti-corruption commitment

The National Customs Authority (ANA) and Global Financial Integrity (GFI) signed this Wednesday (14.12.2022/XNUMX/XNUMX) a Memorandum of Understanding, which establishes mutual, technical and administrative cooperation actions for Strengthening institutional capacities

This instrument provides mechanisms to seek solutions to problems such as corruption and lack of transparency; the carrying out of research and studies in sectors identified as high risk and vulnerable to strengthen the fight against organized crime, money laundering and terrorist financing; the transfer of knowledge and exchange of good practices to promote financial transparency and economic and human rights; and other efforts aimed at strengthening the institutional capacities of the customs authority. 

The act for the signing of the Memorandum took place virtually between Panama Customs Secretary Tayra Barsallo and Thomas A. Cardamone, Jr. President and CEO of Global Financial Integrity. 

"International cooperation is an important pillar in this fight, and Panama joins this international team through this assistance program, to enhance operational collaboration through its institutions, because teamwork is part of the National Government's guidelines to achieve a competitive economy that generates jobs and contributes to the fight against poverty and inequality," said Tayra Barsallo, Director of Customs.

GFI is a non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Washington, DC, that produces high-caliber analysis of illicit financial flows. It advises developing country governments on effective policy solutions and promotes pragmatic transparency measures in the international financial system as a means to global development and security. It is a technical and policy leader surrounding illicit financial flows, and in particular trade-related illicit financial flows. It bases its institutional action on analysis, research and expertise of the highest quality.
