Chilean Customs rescues puppies in Chacalluta

-

Eleven live puppies and one dead one were detected by officials of the Chilean National Customs Service inside the cabin of a truck at the Chacalluta border complex. The puppies were showing obvious signs of stress and it is presumed that they would be sold in the city of Arica, the agency reported.

The Regional Director of the Arica Customs, Fernando Rousseau Amigo, said that during the control work at that border post, “one of our inspectors checked a truck with a Chilean license plate that was returning from Tacna, Peru, with an empty container. When she checked the cabin, she heard some slight howling and intensified her search, so she dismantled part of the structure located behind the driver's seat and found the dogs.”

Rousseau added that the dogs were immediately put under guard and a total of eleven were found alive and one was unfortunately dead. They were 7 Schnauzer puppies, 2 Beagles and 2 Cocker Spaniels. “The driver was accused of smuggling and our Legal Advisory Department filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor's Office, after which the animals were placed at the disposal of the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG).”

When interviewed by customs officers, the driver ECVO (68) said that he found the puppies in some bushes on the road that connects Tacna with Santa Rosa.

The puppies were eventually returned to Peru, where they were received by the corresponding health authority.
