The Chilean Customs Service detected twenty bags with 24 kilos 173 grams of fine silver at the Chacalluta border complex (border with Peru). The metal was hidden inside a Peruvian vehicle with the intention of being transported to Arica.
“The inspectors stationed on Island No. 1 profiled a vehicle and subjected it to a special inspection, detecting 20 bags with fine silver nuggets hidden in different parts of the vehicle's structure,” said the Regional Director of the Arica Customs, Hugo Yávar Oñate, regarding the control work on the different islands of the border complex.
Crime of smuggling
The Peruvian citizen was charged with smuggling and his car was also seized for being part of the crime.
“Although silver is a legally traded metal, Hiding it in order to defraud the public treasury through tax evasion constitutes the crime of smuggling.", Yavar added.
Price
The value of the merchandise is $8.943.537 and the uncollected taxes amount to $2.427.276.

The driver was warned according to the Article 26 of the Chilean Criminal Procedure Code and risks prison sentences and huge fines.
